Dear La Unica, I Cheated On You

Dear La Unica,

I cheated on you.  Mi amor, mi vida, you know you are the only one for me.  But I am just a man.  A man who can be tempted by rumors of a better salsa verde.

Estamos en el Sud, amor, we are in The South.  Here you are a rarity, truly La Unica.  Pero the other night a whisper floated to my ear.  A whisper I now know was El Diablo himself.  The trickster told me of a fine salsa verde to be had just down the street from you, DIOS! Yo se, I know, chipis, que barbaridad.  Pero the poisoned words of El Diablo sunk into my brain and the next thing I knew I was in my car.

Her name is Taqueria Mexico.  I met her at 9 on Tuesday night on South Blvd.

She greated me with a flash – Barbacoa de Chivo.  Barbacoa de Chivo? Mi vida, in the 2 years we’ve been together you have never offered me Barbacoa de Chivo.  Not even your sister on Central Ave…lo siento, I’m sorry.  I know you don’t want to hear about it, pero es la verdad, it’s the truth mi vida.  This is our history.

Pero it was all downhill from there mi amor.  Her agua jamaica was weak and needed sugar.  Her tortillas were rubbery and bland ( though they were doubled up…I’m just saying).  Her salsa verde was flat and salty and tasted tinny like it was from a can.  El pinche barbacoa tasted old and was too dry.  She did have excellent carnitas and al pastor.  Tambien, I say with corazon pesado, a heavy heart, the queso dip with chorizo was lo mejor, the best.  I’m sorry.

Pero en el fin, in the end, La Unica, she was no match for the glory of your quartet of fresh salsas.  Tambien her bottle sauce was El Tapatio, chingadas.  No match for the Valentina you provide me with.  No match for the chewy corny goodness of your tortillas ( though you don’t double up ).  Por favor, she never even thought to give me the fire roasted spring onions or jalapenos that you dole out, no questions asked.

La Unica, mi vida, there may be other number two’s in our future but know that you will always be number one, numero uno.

Michael
